Courses offered by IGCIC:
The Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture has an active teaching programme in Performing Arts such as Carnatic Vocal Music, Tabla, Kathak Dance and Yoga.
The Centre conducts regular courses in Carnatic Vocal Music, Tabla and Kathak Dance at various levels as given below:-
1. One year Hobby Course
2. One year Certificate Course
3. Two year Diploma Course
4. Two year Advanced Diploma Course
5. One year Refresher Course
6. One year Course for Children
Children in the age group 6-12 years are allowed to join the Kathak and Carnatic Vocal Music courses whereas children in the age group 8-12 years are allowed to join the Tabla courses.
As for the Yoga, the Centre has been conducting courses at the following levels:
- Six months Beginner’s Course
- Six months Certificate Course
- One year Diploma Course
- One year Advance Diploma Course
- Six months Refresher Course
- Six months Relaxation/Meditation course
- Six months Course for Children in the age group 8-15 years
Qualified teachers from India have been appointed by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for teaching the above arts. All the above courses have well-planned syllabi and examinations. Successful candidates are awarded Certificates on the basis of regularity in attendance and performance in the examination. No monthly tuition fee is charged; only a fixed registration fee of MRs 300/- is payable at the time of admission.
There is no age restriction and no minimum academic qualification required for the admission. These are only Beginner’s Course/ Appreciation Courses given to encourage the hidden talents and bring awareness about Indian music & dance to all interested but seeking guidance.
Admissions are advertised in newspapers and details of courses are available over phone during office hours from Monday to Friday from 0930 till 1730 hrs. A Proforma is also available in the office for registering the names & addresses of all interested to be in the mailing list for the cultural programmes at the Centre.
