INDIA-MAURITIUS BILATERAL RELATIONS
World Hindi Secretariat :
- Promotion of Hindi and other Indian languages is an important area of cooperation between India and Mauritius. An MOU on the Establishment of the World Hindi Secretariat (WHS) in Mauritius was signed in August 1999 and an Inter- Governmental Agreement was signed between India and Mauritius in November 2003 to lay down the various modalities for the functioning of the Secretariat. The objectives of the Secretariat include the promotion of Hindi internationally; campaigning for its recognition as an official UN language; establishing Hindi Chairs at Universities; etc.
- The WHS formally started functioning from February 11, 2008, with Dr. (Mrs.) Vinod Bala Arun as the Secretary General and Mr. R. P. Mishra as the Deputy Secretary General selected by the Governments of Mauritius and India, respectively. The post of Secretary General will alternate between candidates selected by the Government of Mauritius and the Government of India. Smt. Poonam Juneja, nominee of the Government of India, is currently the WHS Secretary General since August 26, 2011.
